Sox designate Smoltz for assignment
The Red Sox have designated John Smoltz for assignment. Smoltz was 2-5 with an 8.32 ERA in eight starts for the Sox after signing a one-year, $5.5 million contract. Early reports are that Smoltz is headed back to Atlanta to finish his career with the Braves.
